Erik Spoelstra expressed no regrets about LeBron James deciding to return to Cleveland: “This league does teach you that it’s inevitable that there’s constant change” originally appeared on Basketball Network.
LeBron James took the league by storm when he decided to sign with the Miami Heat in 2010. A power move that saw him join forces with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. That said, “The Decision” broke many hearts, with fans turning into haters overnight.

Nonetheless, James had his eyes set on the ultimate prize of winning a championship. He made the Finals each time in his four years at South Beach. After an embarrassing loss to the Mavericks, he bounced back like few imagined, winning back-to-back titles in 2012 and 2013.
Looking for a 3-peat, the Heat lost to the Spurs in the 2014 Finals, marking the end of an era in Miami. Turning free agent again, James felt the time had come to return home, so he signed with the Cleveland Cavaliers. This was undoubtedly a big jolt to Pat Riley and management, who dropped several ranks when competing for the chip next season.
Preparing for their first season after the Heatless Big Three was dismantled, Coach Erik Spoelstra shared his thoughts on James not re-signing.
“We don’t have any regrets. He shouldn’t have any regrets. It was a historic four-year run. This league does teach you that it’s inevitable that there’s constant change, and you always have to continue to embrace change, adapt with change. This is a big, monumental change that we didn’t necessarily anticipate, but you have to respect it because when you’re a free agent in this league,” noted Spoelstra, who was at complete peace with the homecoming call.

The complex coach-player relationship on the Heat
It’s no secret that James and Spoelstra had their fair share of tensions initially. This multiplied when the 6’9″ forward unintentionally bumped into the coach on the sideline. Laughing it off, Spo revealed how the two began to collide every time they crossed each other in the hallway.
Coaching a player of LeBron’s caliber can present unique challenges, mainly due to his elite basketball IQ and playmaking instincts. Aware of their contrasting styles, both James and Spo needed time to build trust and develop a working relationship that ultimately brought them into sync.

Accepting that the two would have arguments in the future as well, but their collective goal remained the same. As time passed, they developed a mutual respect, which was evident from their success on the court.
Spoelstra believed their bond would stay strong
There was a widespread belief that Spoelstra and James would cut ties completely after LeBron chose to return to the Cavaliers. However, that couldn’t have been further from the truth. In fact, Coach Spoelstra later revealed they had already planned to meet once the 2014 free agency wrapped up, dismissing any such narrative.

“Again, you forge bonds through competitions and through great experiences like we’ve had. There will be a time for that. My message wouldn’t be any different whenever that time comes,” mentioned Spoelstra, who was surely telling the truth.
Since leaving the Heat, we’ve seen James and Spoelstra give each other their flowers on several occasions. Whether it was James congratulating his former coach on his new contract or Spoelstra highlighting the work ethic and professionalism of the 40-year-old Lakers superstar, so, it seems there is no bad blood between the former player-coach Championship duo.
