Thunder center Chet Holmgren has agreed to a maximum rookie contract extension for five years and up to $250 million, ESPN reported Wednesday citing agent Bill Duffy of WME Basketball.

For Oklahoma City, it’s an investment in a player who’s been sidelined for long stretches early in his career, but a player whose combination of size and skill comes with star upside.

The Thunder selected Holmgren with the No. 2 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft out of Gonzaga. That summer, he sustained a foot injury that cost him the entirety of what would’ve been his rookie season.

Holmgren followed a lost season by playing 82 games in 2023-24, finishing second to Spurs phenom Victor Wembanyama in the Rookie of the Year race.

Holmgren looked better than ever to start last season, but he suffered a hip fracture 10 games into the season — an injury that caused him to miss three months.

After being limited to 32 games in the regular season, Holmgren played all 23 games in the Thunder’s playoff run. He averaged 15.2 points, 8.7 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game in the playoffs.

Holmgren is entering the final year of his four-year, $44.9 million rookie contract. He is slated to make $13.7 million for the 2025-26 season. He would then make about $41.3 million, about 25% of the salary cap, when the extension kicks in for the 2026-27 season.

Speaking at his end-of-season news conference June 30, Thunder general manager Sam Presti marveled at how Holmgren played through the pain after his hip injury, helping lead OKC to its first NBA title.

“In all my years doing this, I’ve never, ever seen a player in that much pain,” Presti said. “It was really tough.”
