NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – The Pelicans fell 98-91 in their Summer League opener to Minnesota, but their rookie draft picks displayed flashes of promise.
Though not unusual for Summer League play, turnovers were a concern for the young Pelicans. They committed 25 compared to the Timberwolves’ 19. First-round draft picks Jeremiah Fears and Derik Queen both committed 7 apiece.
Aside from the errors, Fears and Queen did show flashes of the type of skillsets that made them hot commodities for the Pelicans on draft night.
Fears finished his night with 14 points, 2 assists, 2 steals, and 2 rebounds. He also found second-year big man Yves Missi on a lob in a pick-and-roll down the lane.
Queen started the game out rough but got stronger in the contest, finishing with 13 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 assists. Queen showed an ability to handle and drive in space, plus find open guys with passing.
Second-round pick Micah Peavy finished with 11 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 steals.
Two-way player Lester Quinones led the team in scoring with 20 points.
