Q: Why do you think Tyler Herro hasn’t been offered an extension? Are the Heat wavering? – Brian.
A: Patience people. The Heat cannot offer Tyler Herro an extension at the moment because that extension window does not open until Oct. 1 (the two-year anniversary of his previous extension). At the moment, there is no discernable reason to open talks, because the makeup of the Heat remains uncertain. Now, once we get to October and there are crickets, then feel free to question. But even then, that only is the opening of his extension window. The silence at the moment should not be taken as a referendum on Tyler Herro. If anything, it should be taken as a referendum on an uncertain Heat roster future. Keep in mind, Tyler is still on the books for $31 million this coming season and $33 million in 2026-27. So what we’re really talking about is the Heat payroll for 2027-28. There is a long time between then and now.
Q: Javonte Cooke looks like he has game. – Anderson.
A: He certainly did on Friday in the loss to the Hawks at the Las Vegas NBA Summer League and also had his moments in the games at the California Classic. Still, don’t get too carried away. The Heat are limited to three two-way contracts. Vlad Goldin holds one at the moment, and one is there for the taking with the qualifying offer extended to Dru Smith. So before acting on a potential third two-way deal, the Heat figure to comb the entirety of the Las Vegas league, with ample eligible free agents for two-way deals.
Q: Why write about Kel’el Ware struggling when Vlad Goldin had one rebound? – Tomas.
A: One, because Kel’el Ware is under standard contract, came at the cost of a first-round pick, and has been valued to the degree of being hands off in some trade talks. So there’s that. He’s on a completely different level as far as scrutiny. But, yes, for the size and bulk that Vlad Goldin is expected to provide, one rebound, even in limited minutes, didn’t exactly cut it in Friday’s loss to the Hawks. And remember, two-way deals can be fluid, with camp or a roster spot not guaranteed to the former FAU center. Still, his effort on Friday was on a higher level than Kel’el’s, which has to be a concern.
