Javon Small is officially headed to the NBA, signing a two-way contract with the Memphis Grizzlies after being selected 48th overall in the 2025 NBA Draft. The former West Virginia standout becomes the latest college guard to earn a developmental opportunity through a two-way deal. This allows him to split time between the Grizzlies’ NBA roster and their G League affiliate, the Memphis Hustle.
This contract format is designed to offer young talent the best of both worlds: exposure to the NBA environment while receiving consistent playing time and developmental reps in the G League.
For Small, the path is clear—earn valuable minutes, continue growing his skill set, and prove he belongs at the highest level of competition.

Javon Small Signs Two-Way Contract with Memphis Grizzlies
A 6-foot-1 guard from South Bend, Indiana, Small made a name for himself during his senior season at West Virginia. Despite playing just one year in Morgantown, he emerged as a key leader for the Mountaineers. In 2024-24, he averaged 18.6 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 5.6 assists per game. He shot an impressive 88.0 percent from the free-throw line and was named to the All-Big 12 First Team for his efforts.
Before landing at West Virginia, Small had already gained experience at two other programs. He began his college career at East Carolina and then transferred to Oklahoma State. That winding path gave him exposure to a variety of systems, coaching styles, and competitive environments. All of these helped him evolve into a more complete player.
His senior year showed clear growth in decision-making, pace control, and three-level scoring. He consistently created offense both for himself and others, blending quickness off the dribble with strong court vision. Though undersized by NBA standards, his tenacity, leadership, and offensive efficiency made him an appealing second-round pick for Memphis. They are a franchise known for targeting tough, high-IQ guards with a chip on their shoulder.
Transition Phase For Grizzlies
The Grizzlies are in a transitional phase, shifting toward a renewed identity built on player development, toughness, and hustle. After a difficult 2024–25 campaign, the franchise is retooling its roster with an emphasis on young talent that reflects the core values of the “Grit and Grind” era. And, with Ja Morant expected to return after multiple injury setbacks and a youthful backcourt taking shape, there is much to look forward to for Memphis.
Memphis is using the draft to find players like Javon Small—gritty, resilient, and relentless and who embody the hard-nosed mentality that defines the franchise’s DNA. Adding him to the mix aligns with the organization’s philosophy of seeking versatile depth and long-term value at the guard spot.
His G League time with the Memphis Hustle will be a vital part of that journey. The Hustle have played a central role in helping develop rotation-level NBA players in recent years. Small should benefit from the continuity between the two programs. Playing within the Grizzlies’ system from the outset gives him an opportunity to carve out a role down the road.
While his rookie season may begin with limited minutes at the NBA level, Small’s trajectory is promising. His college resume, scoring instincts, and competitive edge provide a strong foundation to build on.
