LAS VEGAS — The Philadelphia 76ers will take on the Charlotte Hornets on Saturday evening and for the fourth straight game, they will be without prized rookie VJ Edgecombe. The No. 3 overall pick in the draft suffered a left thumb sprain in his stellar summer league debut on July 5.
As Edgecombe moves forward, the Sixers are not going to push him. There’s no reason to. It’s July. Yes, summer league reps are important for development, but not enough to push him through a thumb sprain at this stage of the game.
Before the matchup with the Hornets, Edgecombe gave an update on where he’s at with his thumb injury.
“It’s good,” Edgecombe said of his thumb. “Getting better. Every day is a progression. Just looking forward to getting it to 100% being able to play. That’s the main thing.”
Edgecombe had 28 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, and two blocks in the debut so one has to wonder when he suffered the injury. He was terrific in Salt Lake City and now will be looking to move forward.
“I can’t even remember the play to be honest,” Edgecombe said. “It just happened during the Utah game. I don’t remember the play. I just remember it swelling up a little bit.”
The Sixers will face the Washington Wizards on Tuesday for the first of a summer league back-to-back. One has to wonder if Edgecombe will be able to play in that one.
