Al Horford is widely expected to sign with the Golden State Warriors this summer, assuming he doesn’t decide to call time on his career. The veteran big man is an unrestricted free agent. The Boston Celtics‘ current cap situation and the fact that they’re retooling while Jayson Tatum recovers from an Achilles tendon tear mean Horford is unlikely to re-sign with the franchise.
Horford would suit the Warriors‘ style of play. In recent years, he’s become more and more perimeter-based on offense. Furthermore, he uses angles to be effective on the defensive end, often cutting off driving lanes or tagging a rolling big man higher up the floor. Therefore, he could help plug the gap at the center position, which has been an ever-present issue in recent years.

During a recent conversation with the media, Stephen Curry shared a quick insight into his thoughts about Horford potentially moving to the Bay Area.
“He’s a champion, great player,” Curry said. “When…if, when all that stuff happens, I’ll talk about it.”
Horford’s addition would give the Warriors a significant boost on the defensive side of the floor. The veteran big man still ranks highly among centers for multiple defensive metrics. Furthermore, he will provide ample floor spacing for Curry and Co. This past season, Horford shot the rock at a 36.3% clip from deep on 5.2 attempts per game.
Curry has needed a floor-spacing center for multiple years. If Horford arrives in Golden State, he will finally have the type of big man who can ease some of the pressure he faces when probing the paint. However, as Curry alluded to, Horford still hasn’t made a decision on his future; therefore, the Warriors can’t start planning around him, at least for the time being.
