Houston Rockets guard Fred VanVleet has been named the new president of the National Basketball Players Association, the labor union representing the NBA’s players.

The leadership position has traditionally been held by some of the league’s most respected players, including Oscar Robertson, Isiah Thomas and Chris Paul.

VanVleet will be succeeding CJ McCollum, who served from 2021 until 2025. He will be the second member of the Rockets to serve in the role, along with Paul.

The announcement comes days after VanVleet negotiated a two-year, $50 million contract extension with Houston.

The deal was widely regarded as a team-friendly contract, demonstrating the 10th-year guard’s leadership.
