The Boston Celtics are in a transitional phase, and have questions to answer on their roster.

Jayson Tatum’s injury was a decisive moment for the Boston Celtics as they approached this offseason, amid an already challenging cap situation.

The Celtics chose to begin tearing down their roster to get under the second apron, trading away Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis.

Luke Kornet has also left in free agency, with Al Horford expected to do the same, tipped to sign with the Warriors.

This has left the Celtics with big questions at the center position, with respected broadcaster Bob Ryan telling CLNS Media he views the situation as ‘scary’ for the franchise.

The situation may have become a little less scary after the breakout performances of Charles Bassey at Summer League.

The Boston Celtics beat rivals the New York Knicks 94-81, and the clear standout performance came from Charles Bassey.

Bassey led with a double-double, scoring 22 points and adding 13 rebounds. He was a +15 during his time on the court. He shot 8 for 12 from the field and 6 for 6 from the free-throw line.

This was his second successive double-double. Across the past two games Bassey has compiled 36 points and 24 rebounds.

Celtics fans are excited about his performances, taking to social media to demand he lands on the roster for 2025-26.

One wrote: “Sign him immediately,” while another simply wrote: “SIGN HIM” in all capitals.

“Should have been signed after first game!!”, a third fan added.

“Sign him and we got our center,” wrote a fourth.

Another fan wrote: “Waive Niang or Queta and sign him up.”

“He earned a contract…fell right in our lap,” wrote another.

And a further comment read: “Sign this guy to a multi year deal tomorrow.”

Who is Charles Bassey?

Charles Bassey, 24, was a second round pick in the 2021 Draft, taken by the Philadelphia 76ers. One year later he was waived and picked up by the San Antonio Spurs.

Bassey spent three seasons with the Spurs and played in 36 games in 2024-25, bouncing back from a torn ACL suffered in late 2023.

Now he is a free agent and is taking his chance to shine with the Boston Celtics in Summer League.

With the team in transition and needing help at center, 6ft 10″ giant Bassey is putting himself into the conversation for a deal, with Celtics fans clearly impressed with his showings so far.
