Wisconsin coach Greg Gard on avoiding March Madness bracket upset
Wisconsin men’s basketball coach Greg Gard spoke about how the Badgers can avoid repeating a first-round March Madness upset like 2024 against James Madison. Wisconsin plays Montana in the first round of the 2025 NCAA men’s basketball tournament.
Marc VandeWettering, previously Wisconsin men’s basketball chief of staff, has been promoted to general manager.VandeWettering’s new role will include UW’s recruiting, roster management and revenue-sharing strategy.He will also continue to work on the team’s nonconference scheduling.
One of Greg Gard’s staffers will have a new title as Wisconsin men’s basketball continues to adapt to the revenue-sharing era.
Wisconsin has promoted Marc VandeWettering – previously the team’s chief of staff – to a new general manager role, the team announced July 14.
The new role will involve working with Gard on “recruiting, roster management, player personnel and revenue sharing strategy,” according to the release. He will continue to work on Wisconsin’s nonconference scheduling as well.
“Our focus is on sustaining the high standards of this program while continuing to evolve and position ourselves for long-term success in a changing landscape,” VandeWettering said in a new release.
VandeWettering joined his alma mater’s staff as the director of basketball operations in 2017 and added the role of chief of staff for the last two seasons. The former Wisconsin student manager previously worked as the assistant director of basketball and football operations at the Big Ten.
VandeWettering has “worked tirelessly to make us better every day and has helped us navigate this new era of college basketball very successfully,” Gard said in the release.
“Marc has been a central figure in our evolution as a program and has already been handling many of the personnel tasks for the last couple years,” Gard said. “Looking to the future, I’m excited to have Marc officially elevated to this administrative role and know that he will help drive our sustained success.”
