Koby Altman’s run as Cavaliers president will likely continue until the end of this decade.
ESPN’s Shams Charania reported July 14 Cleveland has extended Altman’s contract through the 2029-30 season.
With injuries to other contenders in the Eastern Conference and the Cavaliers winning 64 games a season ago, Cleveland just might be the favorite to make the NBA Finals next season.
The architect of the team’s nucleus that includes Donovan Mitchell, Darius Garland, Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley has been Altman.
Others extended in the team’s front office include General Manager Mike Gansey and Assistant General Manager Brandon Weems, according to ESPN.
Despite the Cavaliers’ regular-season success, the team has come up short in the playoffs. It includes a first-round exit three seasons ago, then being bounced in Round 2 the last two playoffs, including this past one against the Pacers.
The past three seasons, Cleveland has won, in order, 51, 48 and 64 games. Now the trick for Altman and the Cavs is carrying that success into and throughout the playoffs.
Other key moves by Altman the past few seasons include hiring Kenny Atkinson as head coach before last season. Atkinson led Cleveland to it 64-win campaign in 2024-25.
Recently, the team re-signed key reserve Sam Merrill, added Larry Nance Jr. as a free-agent signing, and traded for Bulls guard Lonzo Ball.
Perhaps Altman’s wisest moves was two offseasons ago, when he decided not to trade any from his core of Mitchell, Garland, Allen and Mobley after a second-round exit against the Knicks.
Keeping that group together paved the way to the Cavaliers’ 64-win regular season.
“The hard part in any rebuild is to acquire the talent,” Altman told The News-Herald during a recent interview. “When we acquired the talent, we knew we had something pretty special.
“They have high, high level character,” said Altman of his core group. “They have great talent, great character and they wanted to be in Cleveland. When you mix the confluence of great attitude, great work ethic and guys that want to be here, you keep that together. You don’t break that up.”
