The Philadelphia 76ers continued the summer league on Tuesday when they took on the Washington Wizards. At this stage of the summer, the Sixers just want to see the youngsters continue to grow, and they got a boost with the return of No. 3 overall pick VJ Edgecombe from injury.

Edgecombe was unable to really find that rhythm on the offensive end, but he made plays on the defensive end and disrupted things for the Wizards on that end. In the end, the Sixers were able to earn a 74-58 win in what was a grind-it-out type of game with Washington resting the likes of Tre Johnson, Alex Sarr, and Bub Carrington.

Johni Broome had 14 points and 10 rebounds, Edgecombe had 15, six rebounds, four assists, and three steals, and Justin Edwards had 17 and eight boards. Keve Aluma had 12 points off the bench and Adem Bona had nine, eight rebounds, and six blocks.

Here are some thoughts after the win:

VJ Edgecombe

In his return from a 4-game absence due to a left thumb sprain, Edgecombe had a tough time getting into a rhythm on the offensive end. In his defense, the Wizards legitimately fouled him quite a few times and he was unable to get the call. He did not make his first field goal until the third quarter when he was able to explode to the basket. Overall, the offensive performance wasn’t great in terms of scoring, but he was able to make plays for others with his passing and was helpful on the glass. The 3-point shot needs a lot of work, but he is blazing quick with the basketball. When he gets in transition, he is tough to stop.

Johni Broome

The rookie big man showed off his full arsenal on the offensive end. He was aggressive off the dribble, had a couple of nice finishes in the paint, was aggressive on the glass, and had some good moments on the defensive end as well. This performance encapsulates what Broome can bring to the table which is offensive capability along with a physical presence defensively and on the glass.

Justin Edwards

Once again, Edwards had a tough time finding any type of rhythm on the offensive end. While he did knock down a couple of triples early, the second-year forward was unable to convert on many looks around the paint. He does deserve credit for being aggressive on the glass and helping in that category. He also knocked down some big 3s for Philadelphia in the fourth quarter to pull away from the Wizards late.

Adem Bona

The big man continues to be vocal on the defensive end and directing traffic on that side of the floor. He could have been more aggressive on offense as he seemed unsure of things and had some bad turnovers, but he was helpful on the glass, was active on defense, and had some impressive blocks.

Judah Mintz

If there is one thing about Mintz, the guy is going to get to the foul line. He did a terrific job in this one of being able to get into the paint and drawing fouls. In order to really stick in the NBA, however, he will need to bring a little more consistency to eventually stick in the league.

Keve Aluma

There is a lot to like about Aluma. He has a lot of size, can stick a 3, and has a lot of skills that can stick on the offensive end. One has to wonder if a team will take a flier on him in the league.
