Victor Wembanyama Shares How He Hopes San Antonio Spurs Will Build Around Him originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The San Antonio Spurs have one of the very best young cores in the NBA. Stephon Castle, Dylan Harper, Carter Bryant, Jeremy Sochan, and Devin Vassell are all immensely talented, although the Spurs’ long-term success starts and ends with Victor Wembanyama.

In order to maximize Wemby, the Spurs have been linked to some premier stars this offseason, namely Giannis Antetokounmpo and Kevin Durant.
Both stars would fetch a hefty price, although, in order to appease their star, the Spurs likely would have paid it. However, Wemby recently made it clear that he doesn’t want the Spurs to go all-in.
“Breaking up a young core for a single player rarely works,” Wembanyama told L’Equipe. “I want the Spurs to be a balanced team; they’ve been masters of that in the past.”
More so than other young stars, Wembanyama is cerebral and looks at the long-term outlook. He is not worried about immediate success, just lasting accomplishments, and would rather his prime dominate the league than simply be a flash in the pan.

The Spurs could trade Castle or Harper for basically whoever they want, although Wembanama wants the Spurs to stay the course, keeping the big picture in mind.
Wembanyama makes an interesting point. Between Derrick White and Dejounte Murray, the Spurs have traded away recent success stories, although it looked like they wanted to keep Kawhi Leonard, LaMarcus Aldridge, and Rudy Gay all in town to build around, and their famous “Big Three” never seriously was in danger of being broken up.
Harper has also expressed faith in the Spurs Way, so hopefully the team will follow a blueprint they already know to be successful.
