New Orleans Pelicans rookie Derik Queen registered a double-double in a losing effort on Tuesday against the Portland Trail Blazers in the NBA Summer League.
Queen produced 17 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, two blocked shots and one steal in the 93-87 loss at the Pavilion in Las Vegas, Nevada. He went 5-of-11 from the field and was a plus-10 on the court in 28 minutes of action.
The 13th pick had some dazzling plays throughout the contest, including a difficult jump shot over 7-foot Trail Blazers rookie Yang Hansen. Though he finished with a game-high eight turnovers, Queen looked to be perhaps the best player on the floor for the Pelicans (0-3).
Queen registered his third straight double-double with the performance, the most by any player this year in Las Vegas. He is averaging 14 points, 11 rebounds, 2.3 assists and one block on 43.8% shooting from the field in three appearances.
The 20-year-old has had a productive run with the Pelicans, showcasing each element of his game that made him highly touted out of Maryland. He has struggled with turnovers, but that is to be expected on a new team against better competition and shouldn’t be too much of a concern.
Queen and the Pelicans return to action on Wednesday (9:30 p.m. EDT, NBA TV) before wrapping up their five-game stint in the desert on Friday (9 p.m. EDT, ESPN).
