The latest episode of the DallasHoopsJournal.com Podcast dives deep into the Dallas Mavericks’ offseason, with co-hosts Grant Afseth and April Marie-Aguilar discussing everything from Cooper Flagg’s Summer League debut to major staff additions, roster changes, and key injury updates.

Flagg, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, was a central focus. Afseth, who was on-site in Las Vegas, detailed the highs and lows of Flagg’s two Summer League games—beginning with a rocky 5-of-21 shooting performance and concluding with a 31-point showing against the Spurs.

“He called the first game one of the worst of his career, including college and high school,” Afseth said. “But the bounce back in game two showed his poise, versatility, and the type of player he can become.”

The episode also highlighted the Mavericks’ revamped coaching staff. With Frank Vogel overseeing defense and Jay Triano leading the offense, the staff includes seasoned additions such as Phil Handy, Popeye Jones, and Mike Pemberthy. Each brings specialized experience that could prove instrumental in developing Flagg and maximizing a roster led by Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving.

“This might be the best player development staff in the league,” Afseth said. “And the relationships these coaches have with players like Kyrie, AD, and Max Christie give Dallas a strong foundation heading into the season.”

Afseth also discussed the addition of D’Angelo Russell, who signed using the taxpayer mid-level exception. Russell is expected to start the season in a featured role while Irving recovers from ACL surgery and then shift to a sixth-man role once the All-Star guard returns.

Injury updates were another key topic. Davis (detached retina) and Dereck Lively II (bone spur) are both expected to be ready for training camp, while Irving’s timeline remains fluid, though there’s optimism for a return before the All-Star break.

Afseth noted that P.J. Washington is eligible for a contract extension in August and that discussions are expected to pick up in the coming weeks.

Additional highlights included preseason schedule teasers—including games against the Lakers and Thunder—insight into Flagg’s expanded responsibilities during Summer League, and feedback from NBA scouts in attendance.
