LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – Former Midland University basketball player, Cam Wilder, made his return to Nebraska on Friday organizing an event with teams from Lincoln and Omaha.
Wilder said he started making YouTube videos from his dorm room during the COVID-19 pandemic since public places were closed. He is now nearing 2 million subscribers on YouTube and more than 1 million on TikTok. While his main content centers around basketball, he said he is looking to expand his content into other sports as well.
The last time Wilder brought an event to Nebraska’s capital city was a “takeover” at Antelope Park. The Lincoln Police Department shut it down during a game because of the large attendance.
Wilder said that community support is what brought him back.
“It just shows the city showed love and showed out and we needed a part two,” Wilder said. “I was definitely upset because we wanted to play more basketball, I didn’t even really break a sweat. Obviously, I had to come back. You know we only played half a game. I had to come back out here and do it again.”
This time around, Wilder used the Sandhills Global Event Center for additional security, allowing roughly 5,000 people to attend.
“It’s dope to see that so many people across the world, you know, sit down and watch my videos, they love watching my stuff. You know, they can relate to it,” Wilder said. Everybody plays sports, everybody plays basketball. They can find something to relate too and use our personality instead of just playing basketball to help relate to the kids to bring enjoyment to the videos. I think it’s really cool.”
Wilder said he hopes to make it back to Nebraska, but with another stop potentially outside of Lincoln.
“A lot of people are hoping we go to Omaha because they’re not really fond of Lincoln getting all the love, so we’ll probably come back to Omaha eventually just because we have to show love to that city as well,” Wilder said. “But I definitely plan on coming back, especially if they continue to show love.”
