This is an interesting development in the technology of the game of basketball. While 0.6-0.8 seconds doesn’t seem like a huge amount of time, it can be the difference between a win and a loss. And when those second fragments are compounded, a minute-and-a-half of the game is lost.
Precision Time System, just like instant replay, AI, wearable technology, or sensors, is meant to enhance. But sometimes updates and alterations to the game are met with criticism. For game purists, or folks who grew up with and exact idea of a specific sport, there can be pushback from fans and athletes alike.
It’s hard to image issues with a technology that leads itself to more accurate timing, but the Precision Time System was initially met with concern. It took a few years for it to be adopted, and now it is the industry the standard.
