Breaking down Javier Báez’s unexpected strong start to 2025 season

Mark Gorosh and Freep sports reporter Jared Ramsey debate surprising early season performance of Javier Báez for Tigers on the “Days of Roar” podcast.

Longtime Detroit sports broadcaster Mickey York announced his position with FanDuel Sports Network has been eliminated. The Tigers are reportedly “going in a different direction” with their broadcasts.

A big name in Detroit sports TV is being taken off the air.

Mickey York, who has worked with FanDuel Sports Network in various on-camera positions for 25 years, announced on X that his position has been eliminated and he will no longer appear on broadcasts of the Detroit Tigers.

York was recently the host of the pre-and-postgame shows for the Tigers and Detroit Pistons, whose season ended on Thursday, May 1 after a Game 6 loss to the New York Knicks in the first round of the NBA playoffs.

York joined Fox Sports Detroit in the year 2000 as the weekend host of the Detroit Sports Report. He’s also served in various reporting roles, reporting on the Tigers, Pistons and Red Wings among other sports for Fox Sports Detroit, Bally Sports and FanDuel Sports Network.

According to York’s X post, the Tigers are “going in a different direction with their broadcasts,” though it’s unclear as of yet what that means.

The Tigers’ local broadcasts have seen a lot of changes over the last few years as the regional sports networks have undergone constant turmoil. Bally Sports Detroit became FanDuel Sports Network Detroit, and the Tigers also moved on from play-by-play announcer Matt Sheppard and brought in Jason Benetti in 2024, who has been a huge success with fans. Benetti works for the team, not FanDuel Sports Network.

York is not the only popular face in Detroit who has been lost in the shuffle of the Tigers’ broadcast. Before the season when the Tigers announced their broadcast lineup for the year, which included the full-time addition of Daniella Bruce, fellow sideline reporter Johnny Kane’s name was notably absent. Kane declined to comment on the decision at the time, and has since appeared on the Tigers’ broadcast sporadically, and is set to be on the broadcast for every game in the upcoming homestand, according to the Tigers.

In addition, fellow long-time broadcaster John Keating announced this year that he will be retiring from local broadcasts and signed off for the final time this spring.

The Tigers are in the midst of a hot start, standing in first place in the American League Central with an AL-leading 22 wins.

This story has been updated to clarify the Tigers’ broadcast lineup announcement this past winter.
