What began as a basketball tournament has grown into a movement for change in the Lowcountry.The third annual Lowcountry Legacy Basketball Tournament took place this weekend at Hardeeville Junior & Senior High School, bringing together alumni from schools across Beaufort, Hampton, Ridgeland, and even neighboring Chatham County. More than just a showcase of hoops talent, the event emphasized fellowship, mental health awareness, and violence prevention.“The purpose of this weekend is to bring the community together and raise awareness on mental health, while also suppressing the act of gun violence,” said Ridgeland High School alum and event organizer Alex Percival. “It’s really galvanizing everybody under one roof.”The weekend included a financial literacy class, career development activities, and a silent auction aimed at raising funds for future community outreach initiatives.For Percival, the tournament’s growth is personal. “A lot of guys I played against back in high school are here. It’s surreal,” he said. “After the inaugural event, everyone started doing more in their own communities.”On the court, the team representing Hampton County secured its third consecutive Legacy Cup title, continuing its dominance of the annual event.
