SOUTH BELOIT, Ill. (WIFR) – What started as a service project turns into a yearly clinic for young athletes.
Kevin Salser’s basketball camp returned to the South Beloit Boys & Girls Club for the 4th year Sunday. This is something he started in 2022 at just 12 years old.
South Beloit graduate Ross Robertson and Auburn graduate Alivia Brown were among the players and coaches who spent the afternoon with more than 40 boys and girls. The volunteers ran participants through drills and skills to improve their game.
Kevin, who is about to start his sophomore year at Hononegah High School, said he loves giving back to the community through basketball.
“It’s a very enjoyable thing in my life. you know i didn’t know it would be on this large of scale, but it just got to that point,” said Salser. “Just giving back to the kids and stuff I see a lot of joy in that.”
Three-year NBA veteran and Beloit Memorial graduate Kyle Weaver ended the camp by talking with the athletes.
“When I see the people, the familiar faces they were like ‘I remember when you were young. I remember those moments at those games,’” said Weaver. “That makes all that stuff worth it. Being able to be a part of it now as an adult and having a kid of my own and seeing the kids grow up; that is pretty cool.”
