CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) – For over 50 years, the Trent park basketball court remained the same.
Plain gray concrete with regular nets, unpainted.
But just last Friday, residents and community members came together with local organizations to get their hands dirty and paint the court. The Cleveland Cavaliers and Cleveland City Council held a large celebration to honor the work.
“In 2016 I had the unforgettable opportunity to call the Cavaliers first NBA championship and today I see the grand opening of this beautiful basketball court as another kind of championship, one for the hispanic community,” Cleveland Cavaliers Bilingual Broadcaster Rafa-Hernandez Brito said.
This is the first time the court has been renovated in 50 years, according to Cleveland Ward 14 Councilwoman Jasmin Santana said.
“When I knocked on doors residents asked for 3 simple things: safety, affordable housing, and a place to gather with their family,” Santana said. “It’s really not much to ask.”
The Cleveland Cavaliers held a 3-team session after the conference was held, to allow the children in the neighborhood to ‘break in’ the court.
“It’s like a real experience, it feels like a real basketball court now,” 10-year-old Resident Kyle Clark said.
