WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) – You may know him by his nickname ‘Dairy Bird.’ Shooting guard for the Milwaukee Bucks, AJ Green, visited Faith Christian Academy in Wausau on Tuesday to help with their basketball camp.
This wasn’t just any basketball camp scrimmage. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for dozens of Wausau area kids.
“It’s just a sweet opportunity,” Faith Christian Academy Head Coach Russ Bahr said. “He’s an NBA guy that is trying to walk his faith out where he is in a big league and he just wants to pour it into small local communities.”
Green met Bahr at a Christian basketball camp last summer. He invited Green to come up and help coach the summer camp at Faith Christian, knowing the pro shared the same values as the school.
“How they love their opponent, how they respect the opponent and the refs and so that’s why I wanted to be here, because he’s really emphasizing what it means to have a team full of men that love basketball but also love God more,” Green said.
When we asked Green why he took time out of his off-season to come to Wausau, he said, “It’s not about me, it’s the opportunity to come up here and serve these kids. To inspire them, give them anything I can that I’ve learned along the way and my journey with basketball with life. So it’s a no-brainer to come up here and be with Russ and his team.”
Bahr appreciates that someone in Green’s position shares his school’s faith-based values and wears them on his sleeve.
“This is a good add-in, especially when you bring in someone like AJ, really to just pour into these kids,” he said. “When you talk about the Christian faith, we want to develop character just as much as we do basketball skill.”

“Who would I be to take the gifts that I’ve been blessed with and able to use and just keep them to myself,” Green added.
Green plans to host more camps to teach basketball and faith over the summer.
