Two days after signing center Orlando Robinson to a two-way contract, the Magic cut two-way guard Ethan Thompson, the team announced Wednesday morning.

Thompson originally signed a two-way contract in early February but didn’t appear in any games with the Magic while spending most of his time last season with Osceola, Orlando’s G League affiliate.

By waiving Thompson, the Magic now have two of their three two-way spots available to help fill other roster needs.

Two-way contracts allow teams to carry three extra players in addition to the 15 on their regular season roster. Those players will go between the NBA and G League, but they’re limited to 50 NBA games.

Thompson most recently played at Las Vegas Summer League with the Magic.

The 6-foot-5 guard averaged 10 points, 1.8 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.2 turnovers during 24.1 minutes per contest across five summer league games. In that stretch, he shot 31.3.% from 3-point range on 6.4 attempts from beyond the arc per game.

Last season with Orlando, Thompson was active only once, recording a DNP-CD. He was on the inactive list 28 times.

With Osceola, the Oregon State product played in 31 games, averaging 18.4 points, 4.9 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.03 steals during 34.2 minutes per contest.

But scoring in the G League doesn’t always translate to the NBA. Featuring a faster style of play, the G League isn’t known for its defensive intensity.

In addition, the Magic have a plethora of guards on their roster, especially after drafting 6-1 guard Jase Richardson out of Michigan State. Richardson joins recently-acquired Desmond Bane, free agent signing Tyus Jones, Jalen Suggs, Anthony Black and Jett Howard.

After waiving Thompson, Orlando will have none of its two-way players back from last season.

Earlier this summer, the Magic withdrew their two-way qualifying offer for guard Mac McClung. Past Magic two-way guard Trevelin Queen is no longer eligible for a two-way contract because of his four years of NBA service.

Thompson has appeared in 127 career NBA G League games with Windy City, Mexico City and Osceola.
