OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – The Omaha women’s basketball program is entering its first season under new head coach Jamie Carey.
The former WNBA guard has been able to return three players from the previous roster, including Omaha native and Millard South alum Cora Olsen, while adding other pieces through the transfer portal and high school recruiting.
“I feel like Omaha is a super special place and I didn’t want to give up on that,” said Olsen, a junior forward. “Put all my trust into Jamie and I feel like she’s done the same. They all make it a place worth staying. We hope to put Omaha women’s basketball on the map.”
The former WNBA guard is entering her first season as the Mavericks’ head coach.
That includes two other Omaha natives who join the program as freshmen. Elsa Vedral and Avril Smith are in their first year of college basketball out of Marian and Millard North, joining at a pivotal point for the future of the team.
“It’s been a dream,” Vedral said. “Everybody kind of dreams of getting to play for their state. You’ll see it, this will be a fun team to watch.”
