Zion Williamson opens up about injury and recovery

  • July 24, 2025

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – New Orleans Pelicans forward Zion Williamson addressed the media Friday, sharing insights on his recovery after a left hamstring strain that occurred following the Nov. 6 game against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Williamson described the injury as a “major frustration” at first but said he’s now in “good spirits” and making steady progress in his rehabilitation.

“When I left the arena, I felt fine,” Williamson said about the hours after the game. “No problems, no nothing. Got up the next day and came in for treatments, and felt more sore than usual. Got it checked out. It wasn’t what I wanted to hear.”

Despite the initial disappointment, Williamson said he’s focusing on the positives and keeping a long-term perspective.

“The first week is always rough on your mental. After that, your spirits are back up. Being around the guys helps as well,” he added.

Williamson confirmed that his rehab is on track, saying, “Rehab is going great. On track. That’s all I can do right now.” While he didn’t specify a timeline for his return, the 24-year-old shared that he’s focusing on improving mobility and strengthening areas to reduce stress on his hamstring.

The Pelicans have faced a challenging stretch with multiple key players sidelined by injuries, but Williamson expressed optimism about the team’s outlook. He noted the return of Jordan Hawkins in Friday’s game against Golden State and the possibility of CJ McCollum playing soon after being upgraded from out to doubtful on the injury report.

“It’s very unfortunate,” Williamson said of the team’s injury struggles. “But as a team, we’re keeping our spirits up. It’s a long season. Guys are starting to return, so that’s going to be great. Hopefully by January we’re in full stride.”

The Pelicans host the Golden State Warriors in NBA Cup Play Friday on the Gulf Coast Sports & Entertainment Network.
