Memphis Grizzlies star Jaren Jackson Jr. will have a procedure to repair a turf toe injury, the team announced July 1.
Jackson injured a toe on his right foot during a live basketball run while working out away from team facilities, the Grizzlies said.

The news comes a day after Jackson agreed to a new five-year contract extension worth $240 million.
Jackson is expected to miss 12 weeks, the team announced July 2. That timeline means Jackson could be reevaluated in the preseason, and there’s a chance he could be ready by the start of the season.
This is the second notable injury to a Grizzlies starter this offseason. Zach Edey underwent a procedure to stabilize his left ankle in June and is expected to miss the start of the season.
The timeline of Jackson’s injury is an important development, with the forward as one of the team’s most impactful players.

Jackson averaged 22.2 points in 74 games this past season. In seven seasons with the Grizzlies, he has made two All-Star games and three All-Defensive teams.
Who steps up if Jaren Jackson Jr. isn’t ready for season?
Jackson has been healthy for most of the past three seasons, but when he’s been out, the Grizzlies have had a productive player ready to fill in. If he misses time at the start of next season, Santi Aldama is the plug-and-play option.
Aldama has started at least 16 games in each of the past three seasons. Many of those games have been replacing Jackson. Aldama averaged 12 points, seven rebounds and 4.4 assists per game as a starter last season.

Memphis and Aldama reportedly agreed to a three-year contract extension on July 1, signaling his significance and importance on the roster.
The bigger question mark lies in who steps up to fill Aldama’s role. Memphis likely would go smaller by using GG Jackson, John Konchar and bigger wing forwards as options.
Jackson and Konchar both have experience at playing the power forward spot, and each player brings a different skill set. Jackson is the bigger player, but his best production has come on offense at this point of his career. Konchar thrives as a rebounder and defender who is capable of knocking down open shots and flashing as a playmaker.
Grizzlies roster is full. What would next move be?
Memphis would be short on experienced frontcourt depth if it starts the season without Edey or Jaren Jackson Jr. Acquiring another big would help fix those issues.

While it sounds simple in theory, adding another big would take work. With all of the recent additions and the expected buyout of Cole Anthony, Memphis has a full 15-man roster.
A trade or waiving a current player would be the best way Memphis could create an opening for a potential frontcourt addition.
