Phoenix Suns guard Jalen Green discusses joining the team
New Phoenix Suns guard Jalen Green on joining the team after being traded from the Houston Rockets for Kevin Durant.
The Phoenix Suns and Sacramento Kings have offered the Golden State Warriors a sign-and-trade for restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga.
The Phoenix Suns are continuing to seek potential roster moves as they pursue restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga.
Shams Charania reported on ESPN’s NBA Today that the Suns and Sacramento Kings have made sign-and-trade offers to the Golden State Warriors for the 6-foot-7 forward Kuminga, whose stock has risen with the Warriors over the past four seasons.
“I’m told the Phoenix Suns and the Sacramento Kings are two teams that have made concrete offers to the Warriors over the last week or so,” Charania said. “They’re two of the more aggressive teams with Kuminga, and they’re also offering him the opportunity for significant minutes and a starting caliber role in their lineup. Those are two things that he wants more than anything.”
The Warriors and Kuminga are at a stalemate. Charania said Kuminga is in “no rush” to re-sign with the Warriors as both sides continue their negotiations.
Golden State wants a first-round pick in return. Phoenix doesn’t have a first-round pick available to trade through 2030. All of those they do hold before then, they don’t control because they are attached to deals previously made that other teams could use, depending on how the Suns finish in the standings.
The Warriors haven’t made any offseason roster moves because of Kuminga’s expired four-year rookie deal, and they are interested in keeping him.
The former first-round pick Kuminga, 22, was also a key bench player in the Warriors’ 2022 title run when he was a rookie. He averaged 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 47 appearances and 10 starts last season. During Golden State’s playoff run to the Western Conference semifinals, when Stephen Curry and Jimmy Butler were out with injuries, Kuminga stepped up, averaging 20.8 points before they lost to Minnesota.
Kuminga’s been linked to trade rumors since before last season’s trade deadline. He was sidelined from an ankle injury for most of January and February, and was in and out of the rotation after Golden State acquired Butler.
The Suns filled their last two roster spots this week with the signings of backup guards Jordan Goodwin and Jared Butler, adding to a younger roster led by Devin Booker and new players Jalen Green and Dillon Brooks, acquired in the seven-team trade that sent Kevin Durant to Houston.
