Yesterday, we began discussing how the drafting of George Hill in 2008 is still playing out today in the Spurs franchise.

To recap — Hill was drafted in 2008 and played his first three NBA seasons with the Silver & Black. On draft night 2011, he was traded to the Indiana Pacers in exchange for Kawhi Leonard, Davis Bertans, and draft rights to Ezram Lorbek. Lorbek never suited up for a regular season game. Bertans played 2016-2019 before being traded for DeMarre Carroll who was waived later that year. Kawhi Leonard was traded with Danny Green for DeMar DeRozan, Jakob Poeltl, and the 2019 draft pick that became Keldon Johnson.

Up to speed?

I was going to breakdown both the 2021 DeRozan trade and the 2023 Poeltl trade, but there is a lot, so we’ll stick to DeRozan today.

DeMar DeRozan fostered the Spurs roughest patch since before David Robinson came to San Antonio. He embraced his leadership role and developed a strong relationship with Pop, but the experiment was unsuccessful in maintaining the Spurs hopes of a seamless transition toward a continuing dynasty.

DeRozan spent three seasons with the Spurs. On August 11, 2021, he moved to the Chicago Bulls via a sign-and-trade that netted the Spurs Al-Farouq Aminu, a protected first-round draft pick, two second-round draft picks (2022 and 20225), and Thaddeus Young.

Al-Farouq Aminu was waived.

The protected first-round draft pick was returned to the Bulls in the February 3rd three-team trade that brought De’Aaron Fox and Jordan McLaughlin from Sacramento to San Antonio.

Of the two second round picks the Spurs received, the 2022 pick was used to draft Kenny Chandler. The day after the draft, Chandler was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies for a their 2024 second round pick. That pick becameHarrison Ingram, who spent his rookie season on a two-way contract.

The 2025 second round draft pick went to Sacramento as part of the aforementioned three-team trade that brought Fox and McLaughlin to the Spurs.

Thaddeus Young played with the Spurs for 26 games during the 2021-2022 season before being traded to the Toronto Raptors. Young, grouped with Drew Eubanks and a 2022 second round pick were sent to Toronto in exchange for Goran Dragić and the Raptors 2022 first round pick. Dragić had his contract bought out by the Spurs five days after the trade. The 2022 first round pick was used to draft Malaki Branham. Branham played three seasons with the Spurs, his role diminishing in his final season. This summer, he was bundled with Blake Wesley and a 2026 second round pick and traded to the Washington Wizards for Kelly Olynyk.

Recap- the Spurs acquired both Keldon Johnson and Harrison Ingram from draft picks acquired through trade as well as De’Aaron Fox and Kelly Olynyk through larger bundled trades.

And yet, we are still not done.

Tomorrow- sending Jakob Poeltl back to Toronto.
