Stephen Curry picks the two most talented squads he’s ever been on: “A tie between the 15-16 and 16-17 team, those two for different reasons” originally appeared on Basketball Network.

No team has defined NBA dominance like the Golden State Warriors over the last decade. With four championships in the last ten years, they have long been the benchmark in the league. At the center of it all has been superstar point guard Stephen Curry, who has overseen the organization’s highs and been tormented by the lows that followed.

In a recent interview on “360 with Speedy,” Curry opened up about the most talented team he has played with during his time with the Dubs. And while it may surprise some fans, he revealed that one of them wasn’t one of their championship-winning squads.

Two teams, two fates

Curry divulged that the two greatest teams he played on during his 16-year stint in the Bay Area were the 2015-16 and the 2016-17 squads.

“Like those two, for different reasons, were the chemistry, the role, the placement of roles. Like everybody had a specific, you know, job to do out there on the court,” Steph explained.

Of course, the 2015-16 squad was a regular-season juggernaut that shattered a record that many thought would stand for a very long time: the Chicago Bulls’ 72-10 record from the 1995-96 season. With Curry’s and the Warriors’ confidence heightened due to their title-winning campaign in the previous season, they trampled over opponents like they were nothing.

The Warriors’ season ended in disappointment. They fell just short of securing the title, losing to LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers in a hard-fought seven-game NBA Finals.

Determined not to suffer the same fate, the Warriors acquired league MVP Kevin Durant in the offseason. They continued their dominance in the following season, finishing with a record of 67-15. They steamrolled through the playoffs and met up with Bron and the Cavs once again in the NBA Finals.

This time, however, the result was different. With Durant adding another scoring threat to an already potent offense that featured All-Stars Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and Andre Iguodala, Golden State defeated Cleveland in five games and claimed their second championship title in three years.

“We had the highest of skill. We had the highest of IQ. Had the highest of athleticism. Good coaching. Like everything, that was like just peak basketball, for sure,” Curry recalled.

Olympic gold

Another team that Curry considers memorable was the Team USA squad that won gold in the 2024 Paris Olympics. Although the stint was already unforgettable for the two-time MVP, with it being his first, it became even more special when they capped off the run with incredible wins over Serbia and hosts France in the semifinals and finals, respectively.

“It’s hard to find a collection of guys, with the resumes, and in their prime, and you know the up-and-comers, that just all fit,” Steph commented.

“And the other part of that is it’s easy to say ’cause we won and how it went down, but it’s really hard for like a team like that to figure it out in seven weeks. We had to figure it out because it wasn’t nothing easy about Serbia and France those last two games,” he added.

Against Nikola Jokic and Serbia, the Americans trailed by as many as 17 points. They faced a 13-point deficit at the start of the fourth. However, LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Steph conspired in the last quarter and pulled out a thrilling 95-91 victory. Curry finished that game with 36 points and went 9-for-14 from beyond the arc.

Steph delivered a stellar performance in the championship game against France, scoring 24 points and sinking four of his eight three-pointers in the final moments. His clutch efforts secured a 98-87 victory and helped the US clinch the gold medal.

As Steph looked back on those special teams, what made those squads so unique wasn’t just the talent but how everything fell into place. Roles were clear, everyone trusted one another and the chemistry was off the charts. Whether it was the dominance of the 2016-17 Warriors or the all-time greatness packed into that 2024 Olympic squad, Steph relished those moments of pure basketball magic.
