Philadelphia 76ers rookie VJ Edgecombe is expected to step in and contribute right away in his first season in the league. The No. 3 pick in the 2025 NBA draft, Edgecombe averaged 15.0 points, 5.6 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 2.1 steals in his lone season at Baylor.

The young guard was limited by a left thumb sprain so he was unable to do much in the summer league, but in the two games he did play, he impressed. He had 28 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, and two blocks in his debut in Salt Lake City before returning and having 14 points and two steals in a win out in Las Vegas so he showed off what he can do on a nightly basis.

In terms of his goals for his rookie season, Edgecombe hopped on “Podcast P with Paul George” and was asked about his goals for his rookie year. Edgecombe didn’t hold back:

Man, training camp, I’m gonna start with training camp. Just go in and just play hard and learn from everybody around. Man, I’m surrounded by—I’m blessed to be in this situation. You know? Just to be on the team to have a chance to actually win the championship. I feel like a healthy Sixers? We’re going to the chip. You feel me? That’s how I feel. But um, but for training camp, I’m just going in to play hard, but for the year? Rookie of the Year—I definitely want to win Rookie of the Year. That’d be amazing. If I win Rookie of the Year? I’m gonna say it here. If I win Rookie of the Year, I ain’t changing my number.

I also want to be All-Defensive team. They gonna say, you know, they gonna think it’s hard for a rookie, but I don’t think gonna be hard for me. I play defense, so, and I’ll be guarding the best players in practice. Just gonna prepare me different. Tyrese (Maxey), who’s super fast, can shoot the ball, then I’ll have to switch on PG, you know, maybe if he’s switching 5, I gotta go guard Jo (el Embiid)! But I feel like I’ll be ready. So I definitely want to be on All-Defensive team, All-Rookie team, Rookie of the Year, and my goals are to win the chip. Win the chip. That’s my goal.

Edgecombe will certainly have to prove himself when the season comes around, but the base is there for him to succeed. He has a great work ethic and is somebody who can produce on both ends of the floor. It’s obvious that he thinks highly of himself and will look to give Philadelphia the production it needs as time moves on. The Sixers are in need of his athleticism and ability to get to the basket as well as dig in and defend on the other end of the floor.
