Brooklyn Nets guard Cam Thomas remains unsigned in restricted free-agency in what could be a shift in how restricted free-agents are treated in the market, especially with many teams lacking cap space. Brooklyn and Thomas’ representation have reportedly been taking their time in negotiations and there seems to be a good reason for Thomas to see what else is out there.

“Sources tell Fischer that the Nets’ offers to date have not exceeded two-year proposals featuring an annual average value in the range of the league’s $14.1 million non-taxpayer midlevel exception,” NBA insider Marc Stein wrote in his latest article on the state of free-agency. NBA insider Jake Fischer, also part of Stein’s “The Stein Line” Substack, recently reported during a Bleacher Report livestream that Brooklyn has offered Thomas the NTMLE.

“Those offers, Fischer reports, have likewise featured a team option in Year 2,” Stein continued. Fischer had plenty of say on how negotiations have been going between Thomas and the Nets and it seems like the two sides could be far apart in what the other wants. Multiple reports over the past few months have maintained that Thomas is looking for somewhere between $20 million and $30 million per season on his next contract.

NBA reporter Grant Afseth recently communicated that various NBA front-offices believe that Thomas is looking for too much money given his skillset as primarily a scorer before anything else, especially with the current free-agency climate. Thomas, 23, is coming off the best season of his four-year career after averaging 24.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game while shooting 43.8% from the field and 34.9% from three-point land.

As of this writing, the Nets and the Utah Jazz are the only teams in the league with cap space as Brooklyn has $19.9 million in room left while the Jazz have just $6.63 million in space. Assuming that the Nets have offered Thomas just $14.1 million per year, they would have the cap space to do that and meet the salary floor before the start of the 2025-26 season, but the question is whether Thomas would take that offer or play on his $5.99 million qualifying offer.
