Tennessee basketball will not play Michigan in an exhibition prior to the 2025-26 season, a source told Knox News on July 30.

The source spoke on the condition of anonymity because the exhibition was never announced publicly.

The Vols and Wolverines were in deep talks to schedule an exhibition, which continued into July as the schools worked to finalize a plan to play in mid-October at the Crisler Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The plan did not reach the finish line and a game will not be played.

Tennessee has scheduled an exhibition against Duke on Oct. 26 at Food City Center.

UT can still schedule a second exhibition after the Michigan plan did not transpire.

The NCAA men’s basketball committee approved a proposal in January to allow teams to play two exhibitions. It changed the rule from prior years that exhibitions could be held if proceeds were donated to charity. Schools can decide how to allocate the revenue generated from the exhibitions.

UT played charity exhibitions against Indiana, Michigan State and Gonzaga in prior seasons.

Tennessee hosted Indiana on Oct. 27, 2024, played at Michigan State on Oct. 29, 2023, and played a neutral-site game against Gonzaga in Frisco, Texas, on Oct. 28, 2022.
