Thanks to storytellerdude50 for sharing this story yesterday.
A couple of days ago, Basketball Network’s Adel Ahmad recounted when Tim Duncan pushed back against “ring culture” after the 2003 championship stating,
“People say, ‘You’ve done this once, you’ve won twice, what else do you have left to do?’ That’s the stupidest question I ever heard. To do it over and over again — you can’t beat that. Every time that you don’t win it, it’s more disappointing.”
Duncan’s goal was to win every year, and when the Spurs didn’t, Duncan wasn’t satisfied. It’s a different mindset that has been shared by players who make excuses for why they don’t win. Anything from supporting cast to injuries can hinder a title run, but bearing the brunt of coming up shy of the ultimate goal was something Duncan owned. As a superstar, his shoulders had to carry a lot. He displayed a level of leadership not as common as it might seem.
But as Ahmad points out with this piece is that Duncan had a mentality that didn’t adhere to public perception of what his goals should be. Duncan’s drive was fully interior and intentional.
Definitely a piece worth reading and sharing your thoughts in the comments below.
