On weekday mornings, Nevada Sports Net will recap three big headlines of the day in its Morning Download. Read below for today’s topics.
1. Nevada basketball lands in the Bahamas for international games
The Nevada men’s basketball team landed in the Bahamas on Thursday as it prepares to play two international games. The Wolf Pack is taking its first foreign tour under head coach Steve Alford, who enters his seventh season with the program. Nevada is scheduled to play the University of Calgary on Saturday and the Bahamas National Team on Monday. The Wolf Pack will return home Wednesday. We previewed the trip here with Alford saying the biggest value from this opportunity comes from the 10 additional practices the team gets and the bonding that will take place on the trip. Here was our offseason interview with Alford.
2. Luke Hobson posts historic time as U.S. fails to medal in 4×200
In a shocking result, Team USA missed the podium in the 4×200 free relay Friday, failing to win a medal in the event for the first time since 1998. The Americans finished fourth at 7 minutes, 1.24 seconds, which was 0.26 seconds behind Australia for bronze. Great Britain won at 6:59.84 with China second at 7:00.91. Hobson, the Reno native, swam the third leg and delivered a historic performance with his 1:43.45 split the fastest in the field and bettering his individual silver-medal time of 1:43.84. His relay leg was the fastest in the event at a World Championships since 2013. Hobson’s swim moved Team USA from sixth to second, but the Americans couldn’t hold on during the final leg for a podium spot. Meanwhile, Nevada diver Bailey Heydra finished 29th (out of 53) in the 3-meter dive.
3. Argentina national champion joins Nevada track and field
Nevada track and field has signed Malena Galvan, a native of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Galvan brings in high-level experience, joining the Wolf Pack as a two-time Argentina under-20 national champion in the 200 and 400 meters. She is a four-time Argentina national champion, winning the 400 in 2024 and 2025 along with wins in the 200 and 4×400 in 2025. Galvan’s personal best for the 200 is 24.72 seconds with a 55.73-second personal best in the 400. Galvan is the third addition to Nevada’s signing class.
