Council, 23, has spent his NBA career as part of the 76ers’ organization before being waived by Philadelphia in July. Council has played in 105 NBA games over the past 2 seasons, averaging 6.7 PPG, 2.5 RPG, and 1.1 APG while shooting 40.2% from the field and 27.3% from deep. https://t.co/GkuP0dQm9K

The Brooklyn Nets had one of the more interesting offseasons in the NBA with the way that they approached the 2025 NBA Draft and free-agency. Brooklyn made sure to invest in the 2025 Draft by using all five of their first-round picks, but it looks like they are not done with acquiring young players after news broke of what they were able to do with another young player.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, per Council’s agent Adie von Gontard, the Nets signed forward Ricky Council IV to a one-year contract on Friday. With the addition of Council, Brooklyn now has 19 players under contract, not including restricted free-agent Cam Thomas, who still remains unsigned as of this writing. Council, 23, is another example of the Nets committing to getting younger and taking chances.
After going undrafted in the 2023 NBA Draft, Council caught on in the NBA with the Philadelphia 76ers, spending the past two seasons with the organization. During the 2023-24 season, Council spent the majority of his time with Philadelphia’s G League afiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats, before getting a chance to play with the 76ers on the NBA stage amidst some injuries.
The 2024-25 season was the best campaign that Council has had in the NBA since leaving Wichita State to pursue his professional basketball career. Council played in 73 games last season for the 76ers and he averaged 7.3 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game while shooting 38.2% from the field and 25.8% from three-point land in 17.1 minutes per contest.
Council being waived by the 76ers in July was interesting to see given that in April of 2024, he signed a four-year, $7.38 million deal, including a team option for the 2026-27 season. Be that as it may, Philadelphia decided to move on from the 6-foot-6, 205-pound forward as the team is looking to compete for a title with center Joel Embiid leading the way. With Brooklyn, Council should get the chance to compete for a roster spot in training camp that begins in the fall.
