As he recovers from an Achilles injury, Portland Trail Blazers star Damian Lillard recently switched roles, which has many wondering if he will stay in the NBA. As he recovers from surgery, Lillard said he will be the General Manager at his alma mater, Weber State University. At the Weber State Basketball Alumni Classic in Ogden, Utah, the announcement was made. After being cut by the Milwaukee Bucks, Lillard just inked a $42 million three-year deal with the Portland Trail Blazers.
He will now concentrate on helping the university’s basketball program. He stated his dedication to helping athletes refine their craft and pursue post-college careers. “My relationship with coach Eric Duft and this program means a lot to me. I feel like I can do a lot to help the program be successful,” Lillard said.
Lillard had surgery in May 2025 after suffering an Achilles injury during the playoffs in April 2025. He is anticipated to miss the entire 2025–2026 NBA season after the treatment. He might be able to return around the conclusion of the season, possibly prepared for the playoffs, even though healing from such injuries usually takes about ten months. The Trail Blazers and their supporters are still holding out hope for a speedy recovery for him.
Lillard will work closely with Weber State’s coaching staff and administration in his role as general manager. His background as an NBA veteran will be crucial in leading the program, which has had trouble making it to the NCAA Tournament since 2016. Lillard’s devotion to basketball development is demonstrated by his desire to create a great culture at Weber State and his dedication to the team’s success.
As Lillard strikes a balance between his recuperation and his desire to develop the next generation of basketball players, the Portland Trail Blazers and their fans are excited to watch how his new role develops.
