UNCASVILLE, CT (WFSB) – A group led by Celtics minority owner Steve Pagliuca has reached a deal to buy the Connecticut Sun and move the team to Boston, according to an AP source.
This deal would cost the group a record $325 million. However, the franchise wouldn’t play in Boston until the 2027 season.
The president of the Connecticut Sun addressed fans ahead of Sunday’s game against the Liberty.
“I would just say to our fans, regardless of how many more games we play in the state of Connecticut, enjoy every one of them. Enjoy every moment,” said Jennifer Rizzotti, Team President.
The Sun have not officially been sold yet, but everyone is waiting for final approval from the WNBA.
That means there’s some uncertainty building for the franchise, the players, and the fans.
Channel 3 spoke to players and several fans before tip-off on Sunday and there were plenty of mixed feelings.
“That’s a lot of money. Like the fact that that goes into a WNBA team is just amazing, because some people don’t even watch women’s basketball, at least they didn’t a long time ago,” said Saniyah Rivers.
“Continuing growth. Even just seeing the number 100 million for a practice facility potentially. That just means you really care, you want to see us have the same level of play as our male counterparts, and that’s what’s important, just to be seen,” said Tina Charles.
During a press conference, Rizzotti discussed the future of the Sun.
“It wasn’t decided on easily. A lot of discussion and heavy hearts of after 23 years potentially selling the team from what I’ve felt but also the understanding that this might be what’s best,” added Rizzotti.
She talked about the factors going into a possible sale and relocation.
However, she said the deal is not at the finish line just yet.
When it comes to the potential sale and relocation, there’s still more that has to be approved.
