The Sacramento Kings are facing an offseason of widespread changes, and it didn’t take long for the first domino to fall.

According to The Athletic’s Sam Amick, the Kings have parted ways with general manager Monte McNair. The news comes less than one hour following Sacramento’s season-ending loss to the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday night.

McNair, the 2022-23 NBA Executive of the Year award winner, had one season left on his contract, but questions were raised about his future in recent weeks following the departure of assistant general manager Wes Wilcox, who accepted a position at the University of Utah earlier this month.

Over five seasons with the Kings, McNair posted a record of 195-205 (.488) while securing the franchise’s first NBA Playoff appearance since the 2005-06 season.

“I want to sincerely thank Monte for his leadership and the invaluable contributions he made during his time in Sacramento,” said Sacramento Kings owner and chairman Vivek Ranadivé on Thursday in a release issued by the team. “He helped build a strong foundation for continued success here, and we wish him and his family all the best in their future endeavors.”

Sacramento will be in the market for a new general manager this offseason, marking the first time since the summer of 2020 that they have looked for a new head of basketball operations.

Whoever takes the reins of the Kings in the coming weeks and months will have to gauge the future of interim head coach Doug Christie while also weighing the future of a roster that fell wildly short of expectations this season.

According to Amick’s report, Sacramento will target Scott Perry, who was the Kings’ vice president of basketball operations for three months in 2017 before being hired as the New York Knicks’ general manager, and is considered the front-runner for the position.

What’s next for the Sacramento Kings?

The Kings will head into an uncertain offseason that could once again bring widespread change in the coming weeks and months.

Sacramento will need to establish whether interim head coach Doug Christie will retain the position moving forward, while also looking to hire a new general manager after moving on from 2022-23 Executive of the Year winner Monte McNair.

Once the Kings lock in their head coach and front office leader, they will have to improve a roster that likely will not hold a first-round draft pick in June (owed to Atlanta via the 2023 Kevin Huerter trade).

Several members of the current roster, including All-NBA center Domantas Sabonis and future Hall of Fame forward DeMar DeRozan, are expected to meet with the organization to gauge their future.

Can this current core be salvaged? Is it time to move into a rebuild? What’s the best path forward for the Beam Team?

Buckle up for a busy offseason in Sacramento.
