How to avoid a shark attack
While shark attacks are rare overall, here are some things you can do to avoid being bitten.

Posting on her Instagram account, Eleonora Boi — the wife of former Milwaukee Bucks forward Danilo Gallinari — revealed that she was being treated for a shark bite, suffered on a beach in Puerto Rico.
A local official confirmed to USA TODAY that the 39-year-old was bitten July 31 on a crowded beach in Carolina, located just east of Puerto Rico’s capital city, San Juan.
Boi said she was recovering after surgery, but, “My baby and I are fine. I was rescued promptly and the surgery to put my poor bitten leg back in place went well.” She joked the shark would hear soon from her lawyers.
Gallinari and Boi both hail from Italy. The Bucks signed the NBA veteran in February 2024, though he only saw limited action in 17 games, scoring 2.8 points per game. Over 14 NBA seasons, Gallinari, 36, averaged 14.9 points per contest, but he didn’t play in the NBA last year.
According to the International Shark Attack File, 47 people were bitten in unprovoked attacks last year. Four people died, including one person in the U.S.
Boi told La Gazzetta dello Sport that she was near the shoreline when it happened, and she initially believed it was a jellyfish sting.
Boi also said staff at the local hospital had never treated a shark attack before.
