De’Aaron Fox has taken the next major step in his career — and it’s one he hopes will end with banners of his own hanging from the rafters in San Antonio.

The 26-year-old point guard officially signed a four-year, $228 million maximum contract extension with the San Antonio Spurs on Monday, cementing his place as a cornerstone of the franchise’s future alongside rising star Victor Wembanyama.

The team announced the deal, and a person familiar with the terms confirmed the financial details to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity, as the Spurs did not publicly disclose the numbers. The extension will begin in the 2026–27 season, following the final year of Fox’s current five-year, $163 million contract.

In comments shared by the team, Fox spoke about his deep respect for the Spurs’ rich history and his drive to contribute to it.

“Just being able to be part of an organization like this… you come in here and you feel that. You feel that in the environment. You feel that in the fans,” said Fox.

“And then you go into the practice facility or you go into the arena and you see those banners hanging… there’s nothing you can do besides try to build on that.”

Acquired to Lead a New Era

The Spurs acquired Fox from the Sacramento Kings at last season’s trade deadline in a bold move designed to accelerate their rebuild around Wembanyama.

In 17 games with San Antonio before undergoing season-ending surgery on his left hand, Fox averaged 19.7 points and 6.8 assists, demonstrating both chemistry with Wembanyama and a calming presence at point guard. His career averages over eight NBA seasons — all but the tail end with the Kings — sit at 21.5 points and 6.1 assists per game.

Fox’s Spurs stint was cut short in late March when he underwent surgery to repair the extensor tendon in his left pinky finger, forcing him to miss the final 18 games of the season.

Now, fully recovered and signed long-term, he’s ready to pick up where he left off.

“What’ll be different going forward is fans will see me play with 10 fingers,” he joked.
