A disappointing Sacramento Kings season came to a crashing conclusion on Wednesday night at Golden 1 Center, with general manager Monte McNair parting from the organization before fans could fully exit the building.
The Athletic‘s Sam Amick joined The Carmichael Dave Show with Jason Ross to share his intel on what led to McNair’s departure from Sacramento, contemplate Doug Christie’s future with the team, and much more.
Plus, Sam highlights how the current roster members could approach the offseason as the Kings look for stability across the board.

UPDATE: Sacramento reached an agreement with Scott Perry to become the team’s new GM shortly following this segment.
Topics Discussed:
Amick on McNair’s departure: “[The Kings] wasted no time.”
McNair addressed the team in the locker room moments before the news broke that the team was parting ways with the GM.
Sam says it appears that Sacramento initiated the decision to move on from McNair.
“He didn’t want Mike [Brown] fired, he didn’t want Doug to be the coach, and he didn’t want Doug to continue being the coach.”
Sam strongly believes that Vivek Ranadive’s desire to acquire Zach LaVine had an impact on the timing of the De’Aaron Fox trade.
“[Vivek] was the driving force behind all of those [decisions.]”
Will Doug Christie remain in his role as head coach next season?
Sam thinks the new GM could have a say, but it looks like Doug is in a good spot to keep the job.
Scott Perry appears to be the favorite to become the new Kings general manager, with Vlade Divac serving as an advisor (not in a front office role).
How will players like Domantas Sabonis and DeMar DeRozan approach the offseason?
Sam doesn’t think it would be easy to move Sabonis’ contract: “The odds are DeMar could be the one who winds up elsewhere.”
Amick thinks Sacramento will discuss an extension with LaVine this offseason.

The Sacramento Kings are facing an offseason of widespread changes, and it didn’t take long for the first domino to fall.
According to The Athletic’s Sam Amick, the Kings have parted ways with general manager Monte McNair. The news comes less than one hour following Sacramento’s season-ending loss to the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday night.
McNair, the 2022-23 NBA Executive of the Year award winner, had one season left on his contract, but questions were raised about his future in recent weeks following the departure of assistant general manager Wes Wilcox, who accepted a position at the University of Utah earlier this month.
Over five seasons with the Sacramento Kings, McNair posted a record of 195-205 (.488) while securing the franchise’s first NBA Playoff appearance since the 2005-06 season.
Sacramento will be in the market for a new general manager this offseason, marking the first time since the summer of 2020 that they have looked for a new head of basketball operations.

What’s next for the Sacramento Kings?
The Sacramento Kings will head into an uncertain offseason that could once again bring widespread change in the coming weeks and months.
Sacramento will need to determine whether interim head coach Doug Christie will retain the position moving forward, while also looking to hire a new general manager after parting ways with 2022-23 Executive of the Year winner Monte McNair.
Once the Sacramento Kings lock in their head coach and front office leader, they will need to improve a roster that is unlikely to hold a first-round draft pick in June (owed to Atlanta as part of the 2023 Kevin Huerter trade).
Several members of the current roster, including All-NBA center Domantas Sabonis and future Hall of Fame forward DeMar DeRozan, are expected to meet with the organization to gauge their future.
Can this current core be salvaged? Is it time to rebuild? What’s the best path forward for the Beam Team?
Buckle up for a busy offseason in Sacramento.
