San Antonio Spurs Sent Victor Wembanyama Perfect Message With De’Aaron Fox Extension originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
On Monday, the San Antonio Spurs and star point guard De’Aaron Fox agreed to a four-year, $229 million maximum extension.

After the Spurs traded Tre Jones, Zach Collins, Sidy Cissoko, and three first-round picks for Fox, the extension was largely a formality, likely agreed upon behind closed doors immediately after the trade that brought him to town was finalized.
With young guards Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper seen as “the future” in San Antonio, some fans were upset about committing long-term to an older (but not old) guard when there could be better options in the near future, although one person should be thrilled with the deal: Victor Wembanyama.
While Wembanyama, the centerpiece of the Spurs’ rebuild, found success with Castle last season and will likely find the same success with Harper in the coming seasons, adding a proven, All-Star, win-now guard to run the offense sends a perfect message to Wembanyama.

“We’re ready to go for it if you are!”
The last thing the Spurs want is for Wembanyama to enter his prime, whatever that might look like, and have to wait around for Harper and Castle to ascend to stardom. Fox is not a superstar by any means, but he is a top-five point guard who can run the offense.
If Wembanyama is ready to make the playoffs, and chances are he is, then Fox is a better option than Harper or Castle, especially right now.

Extending Fox doesn’t mean the Spurs are done developing young talent by any means. It just cements their timeline as “Wemby’s team,” making it clear that they know that their success starts and ends with him, which has long been obvious to fans, the media, and any of his opponents.
