San Antonio Spurs Sign De’Aaron Fox to Max Extension originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

Months after trading Tre Jones, Zach Collins, Sidy Cissoko, and three first-round draft picks for point guard De’Aaron Fox, the San Antonio Spurs have inked him to a new contract, keeping him in town through at least 2029-30.

Fox readily agreed to four years and $229 million, the maximum offer the Spurs could make. There was some hesitancy among both the fanbase and organization that Stephon Castle or Dylan Harper might be able to eventually replace or surpass Fox, although, as an established All-Star, the Spurs are likely happy with their chances.

Fox played in only 17 games for the Spurs last season before being shut down with a finger injury for the remainder of the year. He had requested a trade from the Kings and listed the Spurs as his preferred destination, citing a desire to play next to Victor Wembanyama.

His first season in San Antonio was less than perfect. In all 17 games, he had to play alongside Chris Paul, another true point guard, limiting his impact. He averaged an inefficient 19.7 points and 6.8 assists for the Spurs.

On top of playing next to Paul, Fox did not get to play next to Wemby. Five games after the trade, the Spurs shut Wembanyama down with a deep vein thrombosis diagnosis, ending Fox’s “dream.”

However, both Fox and Wembanyama are expected to enter next season at full health with young depth pieces behind them. With a full offseason to work together, there is a very real chance that Fox, a one-time All-Star, and Wembanyama become the most feared duo in the entire NBA.
