Denver Nuggets forward Cam Johnson will be playing for his third team in three years when the 2025-26 season tips off with him wearing a Nuggets jersey. While Johnson spent the past two seasons with the Brooklyn Nets, his 2022-23 season involved him getting traded for the first time in his career and he gave the details on how he found out about the deal.

“That’s what happened when I got traded from Phoenix to Brooklyn. It was my little brother that called me and then my dad and then my girlfriend at the time was like, “Oh my god.” That’s all she said,” Johnson said during a recent appearance on “The Young Man and The Three” podcast. Johnson was one of the players that came to the Nets as a result of Brooklyn trading Kevin Durant to the Suns.

“I’m like, “Huh,” because I wasn’t on Twitter. Like, I didn’t have Twitter,” Johnson continued. “So, it was just like I didn’t hear about it until they called me and said, “You got traded.” I’m like, “Are y’all joking?” Like it’s 1:30 in the morning. But, this one I got a heads up on prior to and and that’s appreciated. It’s not like it means the entire world, but it is definitely appreciated.”

Johnson was traded to the Nets along with guard Mikal Bridges, four first-round picks (forward Noah Clowney was taken with the 2023 first-round pick), and a first-round pick swap in 2028. Johnson came to Brooklyn and played some of the best basketball of his career, including the 2024-25 season in which he averaged 18.8 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game while shooting 47.5% from the field and 39.0% from three-point land.

While Nets general manager Sean Marks took his time trading Johnson in the midst of the trade rumors swirling around him throughout all of last season, the former North Carolina Tar Heel was finally traded to Denver. In return, Brooklyn received forward Michael Porter Jr. and a 2032 first-round pick that could prove to be one of the most valuable future picks that a team can have.
