The Michigan State Spartans and head coach Tom Izzo were good last season, but they didn’t have quite enough talent to make a Final Four run in the NCAA Tournament.

When all was said and done for the 2024-25 college basketball season, the Spartans finished with a 30-7 overall record that included a 17-3 record in Big Ten play. They entered the tournament as a No. 2 seed.

In the tournament, Michigan State defeated No. 15 Bryant in the first round, No. 10 New Mexico in the second, and No. 6 Ole Miss in the Sweet 16. Unfortunately, they fell to the No. 1-seeded Auburn Tigers in the Elite Eight.

Bringing in more talent is a must for the Spartans to make a deeper run. Izzo has always been a top recruiting head coach and that hasn’t changed.

On Sunday, Michigan State received a big update regarding four-star 2026 power forward Quinn Costello.

As shared by Joe Tipton of Rivals, Costello has narrowed down his list of potential schools to six teams. One of those teams is the Spartans. They will be battling with the Michigan Wolverines, Texas Longhorns, North Carolina Tar Heels, Purdue Boilermakers, and Minnesota Golden Gophers to land his commitment.

According to 247 Sports, Costello is ranked as the No. 11 power forward in the 2026 recruiting class. He is also ranked as the No. 70 overall player in the country.

Hailing from Boston, Massachusetts, Costello stands in at 6-foot-10 and 195 pounds. He has attended The New School and is one of the most sought after recruits currently available in the 2026 class.

While there are five other schools competing for his services, Izzo’s presence gives Michigan State a fighting chance.

It will be interesting to see if the Spartans are able to secure a commitment from him. Should they be able to do so, he would instantly become a big part of the future for Michigan State’s basketball program.

Expect to hear more about Costello’s recruiting market and a potential decision date in the fairly near future. For now, all fans can do is to wait and see what he chooses to do and which team he ultimately picks.
