Former Cavaliers reserve wing Javonte Green is joining the Detroit Pistons on a one-year contract, ESPN reported Aug. 11.

Green signed with the Cavs in February after agreeing to a contract buyout with the New Orleans Pelicans. He became an unrestricted free agent this offseason.

Green is a logical defensive-minded fit for Pistons coach J.B. Bickerstaff, formerly of the Cavs.

With the Cavs, Green appeared in 18 regular-season games and six playoff games. He averaged 3.3 points, 2.2 rebounds, 0.6 assists, 0.6 steals and 9.2 minutes in the regular season and 2.5 points, 1.5 rebounds, 0.3 assists, 0.7 steals and 6.5 minutes in the postseason.

A Virginia native, Green is primarily a backup. He has played six seasons in the NBA, starting 74 of the 263 regular-season games in which he has appeared.

In addition to the Cavs and Pelicans, Green has played for the Boston Celtics (2019-21) and Chicago Bulls (2021-24). His career averages in the regular season are 5.3 points, 3.1 rebounds, 0.7 assists, 0.8 steals and 16.8 minutes. He has appeared in 12 playoff games, averaging 2.1 points, 2.1 rebounds, 0.3 assists, 1.1 steals and 9.8 minutes.

Green entered the NBA in 2019 when the Celtics signed him as an undrafted free agent from Radford University who had played professionally overseas from 2015-19. The Celtics traded him, Daniel Theis and cash to the Bulls for Luke Kornet in 2021.
