What should we make of the Boston Celtics extending head coach Joe Mazzulla? While the details of his current and prior contracts remain shrouded in mystery as is the policy of the Celtics, we are all but certain he was headed into a potentially tough 2025-26 regular season a lame duck coach with only the season ahead guaranteed.
But well ahead of the start of the next Celtics campaign, Boston’s front office went ahead and added some years to the Rhode Island native’s deal to show some confidence in Mazzulla even though he has never led a team with Boston’s developmental lean in such a role before. What does the decision to extend Mazzulla tell us about the way the front office sees the future of the team? Is this simply a sign they are sure he’s the man for the job? Or does this hint that the Celtics plan to be back in the thick of a title hunt sooner rather than later?
