This is not news, but it was new to me. And it was hilarious.

Dennis Rodman, one of the greatest rebounders of all time, once volunteered to babysit for Doc Rivers.

According to Rivers, this happened while both were playing for the San Antonio Spurs.

Rivers played for the Spurs from 1994-1996, his finale in the NBA.

Rodman played for the Silver & Black from 1993-1995. San Antonio is where he embraced his wild side. It was also the two seasons between his stints in Detroit and Chicago, where he won his five titles.

This happened sometime in the 1994-1995 season, the crossover when both were with the Spurs, making River’s eldest son Jeremiah at approximately eight-years-old. Daughter Callie would have been around six, Austin Rivers was three or so.

Rivers wanted to go out and Rodman was willing and able to stay with the kids.

Rivers recalled the story while calling a Lakers/Kings game.

“It was a one-time thing when I was in San Antonio. I wanted to go out and we used Dennis Rodman for one night babysitting Austin,” said Rivers. “I don’t know if I’m the parent of the year or the worst parent.”

A strange choice, but a great story all these years later.
