Houston Mayor John Whitmire declares ‘Rockets Red Day’ ahead of first-round playoffs

  • August 13, 2025

If you haven’t left for work yet today, make sure to throw on something red to support your Houston Rockets!

On Wednesday, Houston Mayor John Whitmire issued a proclamation at City Hall declaring Thursday, April 17, as “Rockets Red Day.”

The proclamation encourages Rockets fans and Houstonians to wear red in support of the Rockets’ upcoming playoff appearance.

Make no mistake about it; the Rockets have had a season worth celebrating! After missing the playoffs for four straight seasons, Houston took off this year, winning 52 games and taking home the 2-seed in a totally stacked Western Conference.

Rockets President of Business Operations Gretchen Sheirr accepted the proclamation on behalf of the team. She was joined by Elvin Hayes and Calvin Murphy, two legendary former Rockets players.

In honor of “Rockets Red Day,” various downtown buildings will be lit up red on Thursday night. This includes City Hall, the Ferris wheel at Downtown Aquarium, and The Post Oak Hotel at Uptown Houston.

You’ll be able to watch Rockets’ playoff basketball for the first time since 2020 on Sunday, as the squad kicks off its postseason run with a home game against the Golden State Warriors. First tip is slated for 8:30 p.m. on TNT.
