WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) – Midwestern State University men’s basketball is coming off one of its best seasons in recent memory, but the program began searching for new leadership after head coach Justin Leslie resigned in April.
Last month, MSU named Jon Trilli as the new head coach.
“Man, winning the regional championship and going to the Elite Eight in 2010 was really, really special,” Trilli said. “I came back here when I got the job, and the first thing I did was go sit up top and look down because I remember how special and electric it was playing in this gym when it’s standing-room only with 5,000 people. That’s what drew me back here.”
Trilli said his main goal is to bring a national championship to MSU.
“A lot of people tell me that I’m crazy for coming in day one and talking about winning a national championship when I’ve never won a college basketball game as a head coach,” he said. “But I think that’s why you play, you know? So why would I shy away from that? Or why should I lower my expectations or say anything different? That’s my goal. That’s my dream. That’s my vision, and that’s what I strive to do every single day.”
Trilli, who has long considered himself maroon and gold at heart, said he’s excited to be back.
